Family Instability and Complexity: Views From the Bottom
Dr. Edin will share her research and other research on poverty and family relationships. Her research provides new insight on why many poor families have children but choose not to marry. According to Edin, “Everything we used to think about the poor with regards to marriage is probably wrong.” Her presentation will provide a good base for understanding the design of the Family Expectations program, a current program of the Oklahoma Marriage Initiative and the OKDHS.

About the Speaker
Dr. Kathy Edin is a Professor of Public Policy at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Dr. Edin’s research focuses on urban poverty and family life, social welfare, housing policy, child support, non-marital childbearing and the economic lives of the poor. Some of her recent publications include “Unmarried Couples with Children”, “Promises I Can Keep: Why Poor Women Put Motherhood Before Marriage”.
Dr. Edin’s current projects include in-depth qualitative studies of earned income tax credit allocations among low- and moderate-income families in three cities, the Moving to Opportunity and Gautreaux housing mobility programs, which offer special vouchers to allow public housing residents in a variety of U.S. cities the opportunity to move to low poverty neighborhoods. Dr. Edin received her Master of Arts and PhD in Sociology from Northwestern University and Bachelor of Arts from North Park University in Chicago.
